A SABBATH JOURNEY
A SABBATH JOURNEY
The Eighth Day
“God gave the seventh day his blessing and he hallowed it, for on it he ceased from all his work, that by creating, God has made.” Genesis 2:3
According to the Gospel of John, Jesus said “My Father is working still, and I am working.” (John 5:17) The baptismal fonts of most churches have eight sides. Six sides represent the six days of creation. The seventh side stands for the day God ceased from creating but did not stop being the creator. The eighth side of the octagon represents the eighth day or God’s continuing act of Creation in Jesus Christ. The Christian Lord’s day is a celebration of this ongoing nature of Christ’s resurrection. Week seven is by no means the last stop on the Sabbath Journey. It is time to stop, look back and reflect on your experience of these weeks while at the same time looking forward in the future which holds for all Sabbath pilgrims many moments of Sabbath joy.
